As the year has progressed I have realised that I am not just a photographer, or even a fine art photographer, I am a Fine Artist. With this I now intend on developing my portfolio and using range of different media to find my own style as a fine artist.

I need to find out about the curatorial process more and about writing a proposals to galleries for exhibitions. This is one skill I will need to develop in order to be a fine artist, or even a photographer, I will need to talk about more work more confidently and express my ideas clearly so that people can understand. I intend of undertaking a project over summer, finishing it, and then writing a proposal, to possibly getting it shown.

Sound Fjord is a gallery dedicated to sonic art, this is a place I would like to visit, they do take interns but I don’t think I have had enough experience for what they are looking for:

This is how my Cargo Collective page is looking, I’m thinking of using it as a online portfolio, I may change it depending on what design work I put up as well, I may have fewer projects, one for photography, design and other things I make. At the minute if is primarily my photography work but I do want to have other work on there too, but have also realised through doing this I need to take more photos, do more self initiated work.

Attempts on designs for my business card. I’m finding this part of the module hard as I feel you need to have decided what you practice is, and for some reason I still get the feeling it needs to be one definitive one, like being an illustrator, or graphic designer. I’m having trouble with defining what my practice is.

For the PPD2 interview it says to bring along your portfolio, CV and any other promotional material, business cards. As I don’t feel definite on what information I want on there I haven’t thought about ordering any, also I don’t have any free money at the minute to get something I’m not happy with.

Also I think I’ll feel easier with the design/layout when I know what I want exactly have on it, I didn’t want to give this to a course mate to design as part of Live Project as I wanted to design as I am also interested in graphic design.

These aren’t the most interesting deigns, but using an image could be tricky as it would be something that people associated you with at first, just to one style of photography.

I applied to work on the Manchester Jazz Festival a week back and have now had confirmation that I will be helping, yey. There is a meeting on the 16th of June where we will receive our t-shirts and all the information we need, roles and responsibilities wise.

An awesome day in Salford!

Got in for about half 1, so we sat outside in their courtyard and had some food, then as it hit 2pm we headed upstairs to get our volunteer pack and staff t-shirt, which we later found was bright orange, lovely. All the t-shirts and wristbands were all screen-printed at the Mill.

Our shift, meaning Abi, and me started at 5pm on Scared Trinity Church, the Faktion stage that comprised of a lot of strange electronica. This meant we were able to have a wander round before we got tied to our stage, Islington Mill ended up having several stages due to the promoters Panolply not being able to be in what would have been the Albert Mill (this was going to be the bottom floor of some offices up the road from Islington Mill). We saw a set of amazing costumes that contained cutlery to create sounds as the wearers moved, one of them even had a saxophone hidden within a large decorated box, their dancing created music as they moved about within the Mill. Next we saw a gang of drummers, adorned in black with hoods pulled up, very loud rhythms that could be heard across Chapel Street. After this we investigated several other acts before heading to our church to set up. The general things while being on the door is checking wristbands, we also had to keep a check on the number of people coming and going. One of the other volunteers was called Rich, he was helping with the tech, sorting the equipment, we talked to him throughout the night and mentioned out tape label, Magnetic Tape Sound Recordings, and he suggested going into record shops and asking whether they would take a few of our releases and have them on a sale or return basis, he said we should try down in London to spread our label but also the variety down there would mean we could find one specific to what the release contained.

Anyway, the day went well, as aways things run late, time slots change and then you have to tell people as they come in that the stage is running late and to come back in ten, but by then the other stages are running late so everything syncs up again. Also you always get one person who tries to come in without a wristband, very annoying, but you have to talk to them while barring the way into the venue and try get them out before they hear to much.

From volunteering on this festival we have made connections to a vibrant art scene in Salford, Riv who is employed at the Mill and who we worked with, also works as Red Deer Club Records and so have made a connection there for future relations with Magnetic Tapes.

I now have a Cargo Collective website! With help from Johnny Wilkinson, who sent me an invitation, I was going to send some of my work for submission, but this has nicely made me not need to do that. Having this now allows me to have my work online in a professional manner, I have my blog which I update with my work but it’s not solely for my work. As I’ve only just got it there isn’t much up there, if anything but that’ll change by the weekend, as I’ll now be able to add this link into my statement for the F11 exhibition and add it into my CV.

White Cloth Gallery

Right, on LVAF a email got sent from White Cloth Gallery, asking for volunteers and internships. I immediately emailed for more information into the internship rather than just volunteering. Annie, who works at the gallery replied and asked if I would come down to the gallery for a chat, so I did. While I was there we discussed what i was interested in, briefly what I’ve done, saying that I volunteer at PSL but I am wanting a step up in responsibilities, at the end, it was decided I could start when i wanted, they needed some one to come in on Sundays, so I’m now doing that slot, but also Annie said that I could help with the curation, when the install the next exhibition, or at least shadow who is doing it, and also help with their programme of events, as they want something to be happening each week ideally, either film screenings or talks, workshops, or other events.

PPD- Islington Mill visit report

Islington Mill houses gallery space, club room, art library and around 50 artist studio spaces of a wide variety of disciplines. Their focus is more on the process of art, so although having the space for exhibitions they are not their main priority.

I was interested in the mill as it tries to encourage the link between art and music, they are not separate, music is just another discipline of art. I sent an email to the mill asking whether a visit would be ok and what did they think about placements, I thought I may as well ask, being in another city I thought it would be a good risk, get me out of my comfort zone. Rivca, who works at the mill, replied and said yes of course. So me, Abi, and Josie, who were also interested in the mill got the coach and off we went.

When we arrived in Manchester we got a free city bus to Salford and then walked down Chapel St, near where the mill is, is a strange place, there are many run down buildings but newly paved pavements and roads, it had a ghostly feel to the place. When we arrived Rivca mentioned that when they have exhibitions and events they do have advertise a lot as they won’t get the much footfall from anything else, people who go know about it and want to go, otherwise no one would make the trek. We also met Shereen while we were they, she gave us a tour and told us about the mill, its history and how it turned into what it is now, as well as all the things they were up to at the moment.

We weren’t able to see the art library as it was mid way through being moved to another part of the mill, but we were shown some studios, were able to talk to some of the artists there, and shown the galley spaces and the club room, where a band were recording.

Rivca said that due to its size and funding, they can’t offer definite placements but when work is available they call on people who have volunteered on events or such things, who proved to stand out. They also mentioned about Sounds From the Other City, which is a festival they run each year for new and up coming artists and musicians, they needed volunteers and said we were welcome to help.

As soon we got back we sent in our applications and we are now helping on the festival!
